What is Genital Herpes?
Genital Herpes is a sexually transmitted disease that is caused by the herpes simplex viruses type 1 (HSV-1) or type 2 (HSV-2). The majority of cases of genital herpes are caused by HSV-2.
Symptoms of Genital Herpes
Majority of people will not show signs or have minimal signs from an infection. Typically signs will appear as one or more blisters no or around the rectum or groin area. The blisters will break leaving ulcers that may take 2 to 4 weeks to heal depending on the persons immune system.
How Common is Genital Herpes
Genital Herpes infections are common in the United States. The CDC says that 16.2% or around one of every six people between the age of 14 to 49 years of age have HSV-2. Genital HSV-2 is more common in women than in men.
